Choice Review

This volume is encyclopedic in nature, although it addresses the rather specialized subject of corrosion in the petrochemical industry. The material has been collected from a number of ASM publications by many different authors, compiled and edited into an organized format. The seven chapters include three of a general nature--"Forms of Corrosion," "Corrosion Protection Methods," and "Designing to Minimize Corrosion"--as well as four chapters on specialized corrosion applications in the chemical processing industry, petroleum production, petroleum refining, and petrochemical pipelines. Also included are an appendix containing corrosion data, an extensive glossary, and a very detailed index. The level of the presentation is largely descriptive, as opposed to analytical, and is supplemented liberally by many photographs, plots, and tables. Each chapter includes an extensive list of references, and each of the applied sections is followed by a collection of abstracts of the publications from which the material is drawn. The editor has done a good job of reducing a very large number of literature sources to a consistent format and level of presentation. Too specialized for most undergraduates, but a useful resource for specialized technical programs concerned with corrosion, particularly as a companion to the extensive corrosion literature provided by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. Faculty; professional; two-year technical program students. R. Darby; Texas A&M University
