Hood and Arceneaux bring together the literature of the many specialty areas of student services--also called "student affairs," "student personnel," and, most recently, "student development"--into a unified whole that reflects the authors' wish to improve communication among the areas. Although best suited to the new professional or graduate student as a means of introduction, the bibliography will also be appreciated by seasoned professionals for its wide range, and they will find it eminently browsable. More than 600 bibliographic citations with brief descriptive annotations are offered in 13 chapters, 5 of which cover the profession as a whole, the rest being devoted to the specialties. The authors intended to reference important journals, books, and monographs, but a few references to specific journal articles are also included. Sources such as speeches, dissertations, institutional reports, or items available only through the ERIC system were not used. Major criteria for referencing works included both significance to professionals and recency of publication. Most appeared since 1980, although readers will find that a number of works, including some starred as indispensable, were published well before that date. Both name and subject indexes are included. Recommended for upper-division undergraduate, graduate, and professional collections. -C. Zlatos, Northeastern University
