Choice Review

The authors use their 110 years of combined experience to write authoritatively on the design of electric utilization systems for large commercial and industrial facilities. After an overview of electrical design, the book covers in detail voltage calculations and control, volt-ampere reactive (VAR) requirements, short circuit calculations, overvoltage and overcurrent protection, power quality problems, and lighting. Ancillary issues such as equipment testing, safety, maintenance, engineering economics, and energy conservation are also treated in some detail. The book is easy to follow with many illustrations and example calculations. Some of the chapters are well referenced, including lists of books and technical papers for further reading, while other chapters have none. In the last chapter there is a valuable list of electrical standards from many organizations, along with their addresses and telephone numbers. Although this book covers the same material as Handbook of Practical Electrical Design, 2nd ed. by J.F. McPartland and B.J. McPartland (CH, Apr'96), Prabhakara and colleagues do so in much greater detail and at a more advanced level. Recommended as an excellent reference for graduate students, faculty, and professionals.
