Leisure behavior is generally considered a healthful and rewarding human activity, and billions of dollars are spent annually on leisure. Although most people regard leisure as beneficial, a perusal of the research literature makes evident that too little information exists as to what the benefits are, who benefits, the magnitude of the benefits, and what kinds of settings promote such benefits. This 35-chapter volume on the benefits of leisure is written by 57 well-known experts from around the world. Five introductory chapters provide information on trends in leisure and leisure philosophy and identify needs for more information on leisure benefits. Then 21 chapters describe the state of knowledge related to a specific type of leisure benefit. Because of the limited research on some types of benefits, several chapters focus on presenting a rigorous definition of the possible benefits and on the problems of measuring specific benefits. Remaining chapters provide perspectives on the benefits of leisure activity from the viewpoint of a given discipline (e.g., sociology, economics, psychology). Effectively edited and unique in its comprehensiveness, this important addition to the field is valuable for all students, practitioners, and researchers in the field of leisure studies.-R. L.
