Choice Review
The daily news is full of stories about failing schools. Less attention is paid to schools working at the leading edges of innovation and reform. Chen (executive director emer., George Lucas Educational Foundation) provides clear, specific examples of schools that are redefining teaching and learning using 21st-century media, technology, and pedagogy. Chen provides a much needed and accessible new vision for public education. Education Nation consists of six chapters in which Chen identifies the key "edges" of innovation in education: thinking, curriculum, technology, time/place, teaching, and youth edges. Throughout each chapter, Chen offers vivid profiles of over 100 schools, highlighting innovative teaching practices that include project-based learning, community involvement, cooperative learning, student engagement, and performance-based assessment. While he offers prescriptions for change, the value of the book is in his profiles of teachers and schools engaged in innovation. Chen portrays teaching and learning, guided by integrated technologies, no longer defined by students chained to desks and textbooks and teachers locked inside traditional schools. Chen offers new possibilities for much-maligned public schools. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers and undergraduate students. P. S. Kelly Truman State University
