Summary

Summary

A heartwarming tale of terror in the middle of the zombie apocalypse.

Meet Sarah and David.

Once upon a time they met and fell in love. But now they're on the verge of divorce and going to couples' counseling. On a routine trip to their counselor, they notice a few odd things -- the lack of cars on the highway, the missing security guard, and the fact that their counselor, Dr. Kelly, is ripping out her previous client's throat.

Meet the Zombies.

Now, Sarah and David are fighting for survival in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. But, just because there are zombies, doesn't mean your other problems go away. If the zombies don't eat their brains, they might just kill each other.

Author Notes

A Facebook application once told Jesse Petersen that she'd only survive a day in a zombie outbreak, but she doesn't believe that. For one, she's a good shot and two, she has an aversion to bodily fluids, so she'd never go digging around in zombie goo. Until the zombie apocalypse, she lives in the Midwest with her husband and two cats. Find out more about the author at www.jessepetersen.net.

Publisher's Weekly Review

In Petersen's cute debut, a zombie apocalypse turns out to be the best thing for a crumbling marriage. Bickering Seattle suburbanites David and Sarah are startled to discover their marriage counselor eating another couple. After making it home safely, they decide to head to David's sister's house in Longview. Along the way, they encounter the walking dead at nearly every turn and apply their extensive knowledge of zombie movies to fighting them. Naturally, battling zombies brings them together in a way their therapist and assorted books never could. There's a point of diminishing returns-the zombie attacks eventually blur together and an encounter with a cult in a casino feels a little forced-and while the book is short enough to not overstay its welcome, the joke may not be sustainable through the planned sequels. Library Journal Review

Who knew that the end of the world as we know it owing to a biological agent that turns your loved ones into zombies would be the best thing for Sarah and David's marriage? Combine marital therapy with stark, postapocalyptic survival and throw in the monster of the day and you have one dark comedy. While there is a bump or two in both the writing and the adventures of Sarah and David as they race to find family and safety, this first title in Petersen's (www.jessepetersen.net) "Living with the Dead" trilogy, enhanced by Audie Award nominee Cassandra Campbell's fast-paced, engaging narration, is very promising.
