A useful, effective approach to the design of heat exchanger equipment as is used throughout the mechanical and chemical process industries is provided here. The reader is shown how to apply methods of solution that go beyond the present state-of- the-art for problems with combined heat transfer and fluid flow in a manner that is understandable and acceptable to the average engineer. Offering methods of solutions by covering single-phase flows in non-smooth channels, two-phase flow in condensers and evaporators - over and through tubes of any geometry, the book shows how to apply the methods to practical design. A concious effort is made to relate between the needs of the practising engineer and the work of experimental and mathematical researchers who sometimes fail to appreciate the needs of engineers in industry.

The ideas of using thermodynamic concepts, particularly the concept of entropy generation, to analyze fluid flow and heat transfer problems has gained popularity in recent years. The pioneering book on the subject appeared in 1982, A. Bejan's Entropy Generation Through Heat and Fluid Flow (CH, Mar '83). Soumerai's work complements Bejan's book and discusses single and multiphase fluid flow and heat transfer processes in the light of thermodynamic laws. Practical applications are emphasized throughout. A unique feature is the thorough treatment of concepts of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. The writing is clear and succinct. The quality of bibliography and index matches that of standard technical books. Soumerai's vast practical experience in thermal industry makes him qualified to write on the subject. The book is full of practical recommendations for thermal engineers. Since the volume contains a wealth of knowledge in an area that has emerged only in recent years, it represents a very significant contribution.
