A past chairman of the ASCE Committee on Wind Effects, he was the 1984 recipient of the U.S. Federal Engineer of the Year Award from the National Society of Professional Engineers.

ROBERT H. SCANLAN, PhD, Dr. ès Sci., PE, is Professor Emeritus at Princeton University and Professor of Civil Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He is a past chairman of the ASCE Committee on Wind Effects, Honorary Member of ASCE, Life Member of ASME, Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics, and Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.

Choice Review

This important publication represents a quantum improvement over the previous editions (1st ed., CH, Dec'78; 2nd ed., 1986). It has been extensively revised, updated, and expanded to bring it up to the state-of-the-art. Although the overall structure is unchanged, the number of chapters have been increased from 11 to 17, and there are two more appendixes. In addition, a diskette with interactive software for building wind load calculations has been added. Working in a Windows NT 4.0 environment, this reviewer found no difficulty with software installation and execution. New chapters discuss wind load effects on special structures, e.g., slender towers, cooling towers, plate girders, cable supported structures, and offshore structures. New topics, e.g., wind effects on low rise-buildings, hurricane micrometeorology, computational fluid dynamics, and empirical aeroelastic modeling, are important additions. There is a special chapter on ASCE Standards 7-95 on wind loading of buildings. Good quality illustrations; adequately expanded references.
