Summary

Summary

The second edition of this book is intended to extend the strengths of the first. Some of the changes are: more than 200 new exercises have been added; a new section on point estimation has been added to Chapter 4; the material on histograms in Chapter 1 has been completely revised; Chapter 2 now contains a discussion of Chebyshev's inequality; Chapter 4 now contains a discussion of the uniform distribution; The section on the normal distribution contains a discussion on linear functions of normal random variables; Chapter 7 contains additional material on the correlation coefficient; Chapter 10 contains a discussion of the relationship between control charts and hypothesis tests. The exposition has been improved in a number of places. Also new for this edition is the ARIS online course management system. ARIS provides automatic grading of student assignments and keeps a record of students' grades. In addition, ARIS contains problems for student practice, along with Java applets that allow students to interactively explore ideas in the text.
