Library Journal Review
In a major revision of a work first published in 1991, the first to include a CD-ROM and Internet resources, this classic of construction is updated, expanded, and brought into the 21st century. The result is as comprehensive a construction dictionary as is possible in a single volume. The 19,000 construction terms, phrases, and abbreviations are complemented by profuse illustrations 1200 simple line drawings and expanded graphics on the CD-ROM. About 1000 of the definitions are new to this edition, which has been updated to include the latest technology, materials, and processes. Abbreviations are explained at the beginning of each letter, before the definitions for words and phrases are given. The concluding "Reference Section" offers a comprehensive delineation of professional associations (unfortunately limited to the Unites States) and five focused area discussions of weights, metric conversions, preliminary building size, definitions of elements in formulae, and symbols. No author is directly credited, but sources of specific information are credited in the acknowledgments, and the Means editorial staff has not relied on personal knowledge but has made inquiries where appropriate. The price may be a touch daunting but worth it when one considers that this package includes the searchable CD-ROM with complete, sometimes even expanded definitions, added graphics, and Internet links. An excellent overhaul of a very fine predecessor, this is an indispensable resource for large do-it-yourself, homeowner, or construction collections. Highly recommended.
