Reviews 1

Choice Review

At a time when the contributions of qualitative research too often seem eclipsed by evidence-based health care practice, dominated by randomized clinical trials and other quantitative studies, this second edition by Green and Thorogood (both, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) provides valuable reassurance. The authors offer a dense, thorough, and articulate introduction to the use, value, conduct, and critique of qualitative research for health care and social science researchers, practitioners, and policy makers. The book's clear organization allows readers to focus in more depth on particular areas of interest and to skim others. Green and Thorogood avoid simplistic generalizations and, when dealing with theoretical and methodological issues, demonstrate a level of thoughtfulness and grasp of detail not always found in qualitative texts. For those already familiar with qualitative methods, the chapters on data analysis and use of sources beyond the familiar interview may be particularly useful. Using just enough examples to support their arguments, the authors make a well-reasoned case for the irreplaceable contributions of qualitative research findings to health care practice, delivery, and policy. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students through professionals/practitioners; general readers. M. D. Lagerwey Western Michigan University
