The main intention of this thesis is to study the availability of tactual maps in Malaysia and finally to produce it. A mobility tactual map of the Brickfields area where the Gurney Training Centre for the blind is situated was taken as a test case. In addition the author also hope that this thesis will give an insight to cartographers the need of their expertise in the design of tactual maps and graphics. Of the various methods of tactual map productions in exixtence, the only various methods of tactual map productions in existence, the only method available in Malaysia is the thermoforming process; hence it is used. Thus the famous Nottingham Map-making Kit which was bought from England by the author and the American Thermoform Brailon Duplicator which is available ocally are being used in the production of the map. Nevertheless, the other methods are also being mentioned but briefly. The early chapters give the introduction of tactual mapping, its comparison with traditional visual maps and the relationship between tactual mapping and cartography. The various stages of cartographic design and production are described in detail. The final product is a tactual map depicting important roads, public and private buildings and also landmarks of importance to the blind. The Nottingham Tool Kit and the American Therform Brailon Duplicator are also introduced here. In addition to that, teaching methods and comments form the blid users are invaluable and as such are included too. The general comments are that they are new to the idea of using overlays and underlays. The scale is of no importance to them and the information presented is crowded; possibly due to their non-familiarity in using such mobility maps.
