The existence of raft houses in the east coast of West Malaysia has proved to be somewhat of an enigma. The aspect of building raft houses has never yet till now been documented an it is hoped that this dissertation will serve as a historical reference and a source of general knowledge for interested parties. These raft houses as any other squatter's home found complete with its lack of satisfactory accomodation and services which are always below the standard set for comfort and safety. Greater account will be given to these problems and also to the physical aspects of raft houses in respects to houses on land. The aim of the study is to make the research a valuable piece of information in terms of the history of raft houses in the East Coast, the relationship of activity, social and the physical design occupants. Complementary to this study the type of structure construction and materials used will also be focussed on. As such, the study will serve as a comprehensive reference for answers to question posed on the subject matter, by those involved in its documentation, be it for present or future references. The course of the study begins with an attempt to trace the existence of the raft houses and to observe the various changes and development it has undergone till today. A closer look at the lifestyles of the occupants of the raft houses will undoubtedly show the implications of the 'floating' existence towards the occupants. The problems, constraints and also the peculiarity of the lifestyle will be dealt with in the micro and general aspect, thoroughly. an in depth study of the adopted structural system, the spaces, construction and building materials used especially tradional materialas such as bamboo to give bouyancy to the structure will be put foward. Research in the form of participation of the occupants through the questionaires given to them have also proved to be an invaluable analytical source of the study. The study will endeavour to put forward an informative clarification, relative to the achievement of a research, which studies through extensive facts presented. It si hoped that the study will produce an in depth research reference for interested parties and also for general knowledge and clarification.
