The changing structure of the American family and the relationship of this evolution to the labor market has attracted the interest of both scholars and policymakers for more than 20 years. This book is a useful contribution to this dialogue. It provides analysis of this issue from a wide range of perspectives including both labor and management experts, policymakers, and academicians. Topics range from the problems of childcare and early childhood education to gender discrimination at the workplace and public and private policies that focus on family issues. The book is well written and benefits from the efforts of respected contributors. While experts in the field will probably find little new in the volume, it offers an excellent introduction to the relationship between two of our most important institutions. College collections.-B.
