The design examples can be put to immediate use, as is, or can be modified as required to meet a specific design goal, by following the instructions.

Choice Review

This "how-to" book for beginners bridges the gap between classroom theory and the practical knowledge required to build a linear power supply that works. Although the use of such devices has decreased over the past 20 years in favor of switching power supplies, they are still extensively used in many applications. Lenk gives detailed instructions on their design and construction, and describes power supplies made of discrete components, operational amplifiers (op amps), and integrated circuits (ICs). A chapter describes the use of heat sinks; another is devoted to testing power supplies, including how to avoid common problems such as ground loops. Lenk is a prolific writer on the practical considerations of different aspects of electrical engineering (he has more than 35 books in print). Similar books covering all types of power supplies are Irving M. Gottlieb's Design and Build Electronic Power Supplies (1991) and his Regulated Power Supplies, (4th ed., 1992).
