Choice Review
This annual directory of postsecondary institutions in 183 countries was produced by UNESCO and IAU, an NGO established to encourage communications among higher educational institutions throughout the world. Those organizations also produced International Handbook of Universities 2001-2002; a CD-ROM version of both is available (see http://www.unesco.org/iau/whed.html). Students and faculty may avoid World List because it provides no subject or institutional name indexes, and arranges entries alphabetically by country, then subdivides by universities and colleges awarding doctorates: public, private, other institutions, universities and colleges without graduate schools. "Other institutions" include teacher's colleges, vocational schools, law schools, and branches of US institutions outside the US. Students and faculty may not know whether the institution they are researching is public, private, or other. In addition, information about each institution is minimal; only its address, e-mail address, and URL (when provided) are valuable. Various Peterson's guides (home page online at http://www.petersons.com/)--College Blue Books, Peterson's Annual Guides to Graduate Institutions and Programs, or Accredited Institutions of Post Secondary Education--are all preferable because they are more user-friendly and offer detailed alternatives. ^BSumming Up: Optional.
