Mehmet presents a good analytical study of economic growth, income distribution, and poverty in Malaysia. The author examines quite successfully, why poverty has tended to persist in Malaysia in spite of impressive overall economic growth since 1970. He finds fault with the formulation of new economic policy and particularly with its implementation. Mehmet suggests methods to deal with the problems he identifies and considers their socioeconomic implications. Although there are several books on general economic development in Malaysia, this one is a particularly useful reference for graduate students in economic development and Asian studies interested in the impact of economic development on income distribution in underdeveloped countries.-J.S.
