Booklist Review
The lifestyles of the rich and famous have always made for fascinating reading, and Britain's Country Life magazine has championed that world for more than 100 years, showcasing the manor houses and manicured gardens not only of its own renowned citizenry but also those in the Mediterranean region as well. From the lush countrysides of Italy, Greece, and Spain to the decadent beaches of the French Riviera and the exotic ports of Algeria and Portugal, Bradley-Hole demonstrates her discerning eye for the wonders of 33 of the region's most opulent villas and gardens. Selecting sites as much for their historical significance as for their horticultural luxuriance, Bradley-Hole reverently celebrates them through 200 arresting black-and-white and color photographs that vibrantly contrast the joyous exuberance of such lavish gardens as Algeria's Campagne Montfeld with the ethereal mystery of France's renowned Lou Seuil villa, in a stunningly presented homage to some of the world's most abundantly atmospheric private and public gardens. --Carol Haggas Copyright 2006 Booklist
Library Journal Review
Bradley-Hole (gardens editor, Country Life; Lost Gardens of England) celebrates 30-some gardens from around the Mediterranean that have been featured in her magazine over the past 100 years. Well known for its coverage of English gardens and gardening, Country Life has also showcased fine gardens from other countries. The author combines new informative texts on the creation and history of these gardens, quotes and photographs from the original articles, and new photographs. She offers insight into a century of garden design and the vacationing and wintering habits of the wealthy English of a previous era. The fascinating section on the colonial and Arabic gardens of Algeria and the 200 excellent color and black-and-white photographs set this volume apart from the spate of recent books on Mediterranean gardens. Much more than the mere compilation its title might suggest, this also provides a history of publishing on gardens, but it would have been helpful to cite the original articles rather than bury the information in the bibliography; readers would have also benefited from knowing which photographs were originally published, which are from the magazine's archives, and which are new to the book. Recommended for large gardening collections.-Daniel Starr, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
