The city centre has always attracted special attention. One reason forthis is the concentration of taller buildings that is invariably found in the centre. This characteristics immediately separate the area out from the complex urban mosaic and gives it a distinct image. More than this, however, the centre impinges directly on the life of a large proportion of the city's population whether they be employers or employees, shopkeepers or shoppers, artistes or entertainment seekers or simply frustrated motorists attempting to cross the congested city. The city plays an impotant role in the life and economy by providing goods and services for people ove an area theat often extends well beyond the limits of the immediate built-up space. Over the past ten years, the growth of Alor Star had been sepctacular where affluence and car ownership have become more widespread than ever before, agradual change in the function and status of teh central area has been observed. This dissertation is devoted to studying the changing land use pattern, their locational pattern, reasons for growth and most important of all the future prospects of Alor Star as a growing town. In the first part, this dissertation sets out to develop a clearer picture of the land use arrangement and changing structure of the town which currently exists. This objective is pursued through a detailed examination and analysis of land use arrangement, activity patterawithin the city centre and ways in which these patterns are changing. The second part attempts to forecast the future land use pattern as well as the future prospects of growth. The conclusion is drawn upon observation and analysis of the part. Throughout the course of preparing this disertation, various difficulties and setbacks are encountered resulting for the lack of valuable date on Alor Star town. Invariably analysis has to be drawn heavily from the writer's own observation.
