Summary

Summary

Hardbound. The Encyclopedia of Higher Education is an entirely original work providing an up-to-date, comprehensive, critical, state-of-the-art review of higher education worldwide on a scale previously unknown. The articles are authored by internationally recognized experts in their field. A distinctive feature of the Encyclopedia is its exceptionally strong thematic coherence. Rather than using the traditional A-to-Z structure, the Encyclopedia divides the 300 plus articles into four volumes grouped under major themes and topics. Volume I is entirely given over to reports of 137 national systems of higher education - from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Volumes II and III present 120 analytical papers organized into five themes: Higher Education and Society; The Institutional Fabric of the Higher Education System; Governance, Administration and Finance; Faculty and Students: Teaching, Learning and Research; and Discip

Choice Review

In the last half of the 20th century, higher education has become a critical institution in the development of societies and nations and the university, wherever it has risen, has shown itself a uniquely durable institution. The study of higher education long has needed an integrative and comprehensive encyclopedia. This work is a monumental achievement that goes well beyond both the parent work, International Encyclopedia of Education (CH, Sep'86), and The International Encyclopedia of Higher Education, ed. by Asa Knowles (CH, Jul'78; now out of print and in many areas obsolete). Arguably, this new effort is one of the most important reference tools in higher education since the Knowles work. Volume 1 contains analyses of more than 135 national systems of higher education. Volumes 2 and 3 present analytical papers on an extensive range of issues and problems within the field, while Voluume 4 offers a unique and comprehensive review of the development of core academic disciplines. Volume 4 is heavily contextual and portrays disciplines as ongiong concerns that reach across institutions and nations. This important section permits readers to grasp readily the patterns of thought in the major disciplines, the traditional symbols and identities associated with those disciplines, and the distinctive disciplinary practices that condition the academic lives of faculty and students. An impressive work, organized to render it invaluable to scholars in many disciplines. The price can be justified even if that means not purchasing a few other new reference works in higher education. E. Garten; University of Dayton
