Author Notes

William J Hirsch, Jr AIA, NCARB is a registered Architect with over forty years of experience. He has extensive experience in custom residential design as well as in the deisgn of commercial, office, religious, recreational and industrial buildings. He has designed homes throughout the United States, including Hawaii, and has designed or consulted on homes in Europe and Asia as well. He is a member of the American Institure of Architecture and he past president of the Delaware Society of Architects. He received his masters degree from the University of Virginia. Hirsch believes Rresidential Design is a very personal and emotional process that has to express the personality and needs of rhe owner, not the architect. He currently lives in North Carolina with his wife, Maureen.

The decision to build a new home can be daunting for an amateur. Architect Hirsch takes one through the process from idea to completion. Drawing many examples from his own practice, he explains the process and philosophy of residential design as seen from a professional's view and discusses what to consider when creating one's dream home.
