Library Journal Review
As librarians fresh in the field quickly discover, there's a lot they didn't learn in library school. Running libraries isn't just about buying books, and novice managers find that out quickly when they encounter a malfunctioning phone system and have to write an RFP (Request for Proposal) for a new one. Now new and experienced administrators can get a better grip on the leaking roof, the inventory process, requirements for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), preventive building maintenance, heating and cooling systems, and more by reading this handbook. In addition to the aforementioned items, detailed here are guidelines for writing RFPs (and why this should be done), sample job descriptions for custodians, cleaning of the library, long-range maintenance plans for inside and outside of the building, safety and security considerations, budgeting techniques, and disaster preparedness. Questions to consider and those to ask are covered in all topic areas; sample forms and checklists abound throughout the text and provide very useful information. Additional resources are listed in the bibliography. Librarians in small and medium-sized facilities will welcome this book as a starting point in learning about the day-to-day running of the library. Carmine J. Trotta has been the chair of the White House Conference on Library and Information Services Task Force since 1996 and is the director of Support Systems for Boys Village in Milford, CT. Marcia Trotta is the director of the Meriden Public Library, CT, and past president of the Connecticut Library Association. She is also an adjunct professor at the School of Library Science and Information Technology at Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven. Their volume is highly recommended.
