Choice Review

A book created by the staff of the General Electric Corporation initially for its own internal use in 1976, this much revised version gives the reader the benefits of ten years worth of feedback. Very practical and reasonably comprehensive, it is both a tutorial for the new practioner and a reference work for the software manager. The authors introduce the elements of software engineering in practical, easy-to-understand prose that is enhanced by terrific graphics and excellent typesetting. The handbook provides the manager with guidance in planning and estimating; it also treats alternative methods and the features of potential problems. All sections and chapters are summarized. In addition, there is a 36-page example, a glossary, a reasonable bibliography, and a good but brief overview of quantitative methods appropriate for software engineering. The one disappointment is the index, which is very abbreviated and derived from chapter structures. Recommended for all libraries serving patrons interested in a practical approach to software development.-M.J. McGill, Syracuse University
