Summary

Summary

Do you need to get up to speed quickly on the technologies and services that could transform the wireless world over the coming decade? Whether you work directly with wireless or in a sector where wireless solutions could be beneficial (e.g. healthcare, transport, sensor networks, location and smart metering), this concise guide provides a critical insight into future developments. For the first time, you will have a clear view of all the key technologies, including mesh networks, white space/cognitive devices, 4G/LTE and femtocells, and all the sectors or applications in which they could be used, with a comparison of the positives and negatives of each technology and sector area. You'll also see where the technologies required overlap and so could bring benefits across multiple areas, as well as how the key drivers of change in the past may impact on the future.

Author Notes

William Webb received both a Ph.D. in mobile radio and an M.B.A. from Southampton University.

Dr. Webb is director of strategy at Motorola. He is a fellow of the IEEE, a senior member of the IEEE, and a chartered engineer. Dr. Webb holds four patents and has also authored Introduction to Wireless Local Loop, Second Edition; The Complete Wireless Communications Professional; and Understanding Cellular Radio (Artech House 2000, 1999, 1998). He is listed in “Who’s Who in America”.

Choice Review

This relatively short book attempts to present a very broad array of topics and give an overview of the diverse applications of wireless technologies. One might consider it folly for an author to attempt to predict the future in technical areas related to wireless and the Internet because of the ever-accelerating revolution that is taking place. But Webb, a UK-based communications technology specialist, author, and futurist, has proven in past books (ten other titles; e.g., The Future of Wireless Communications, 2001) that his predictions are remarkably accurate. In 22 well-written chapters, this book explores technologies such as 4G and compression, as well as predictions for the future, which the author titles "Solutions.. The breadth of topics is impressive, ranging from data compression and codecs to healthcare and entertainment. The book can be appreciated on many levels. Someone with technical knowledge will gain new perspectives. Alternatively, even the novice will gain lots of insight due to the clarity of the writing. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries. M. S. Roden emeritus, California State University, Los Angeles
