Summary

Presentation Zen will help presenters see the process in a way that is different, simpler, more visual, more natural, more effective, and ultimately far more meaningful. Presentations are generally poor because their creators have learned bad habits and lack awareness and knowledge about what makes for a great presentation (and what does not). This book aims to help people break out of the rut of making typical PowerPoint presentations. This book provides an equal dose of inspiration and education. The content focuses on helping readers become (1) more aware, (2) more knowledgeable, and (3) more inspired. Presentation Zen is a provocative mix of illumination, education, and guidance. What may seem like common sense regarding presentations is not common practice. Presentation Zen is an approach to presentations that is appropriate for our age, an age in which design thinking, storytelling and so-called right-brain thinking are crucial. Choice Review

Readers looking for a book on how to technically assemble a PowerPoint presentation will not find it here. Illustrated with copious color pictures and slide examples, the book covers preparation, design, and delivery, and addresses the simple and creative aspects of why and how to create and deliver a successful presentation. Tips along the way include how to use empty space, balance, contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. Designer and writer Reynolds decries the standard slide presentation of animated bulleted lists illustrated with dowdy clip art, and challenges the reader to think creatively and simply and to use high-quality graphics. How many bullets per slide? How about none! As the author himself notes, the book is not about Zen, but about a Zen approach to presentation, rather than a set of rules. Reynolds especially focuses on the differences that should exist between well-written detailed handouts as documents to be read, and slides as visual presentations to be viewed. The before-and-after slide illustrations support the author's main points. Is this book unique? Only in its approach to the tenets of Zen simplicity driving presentation design. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers; upper-division undergraduates and graduate students. S.G. Almquist University of North Texas
