Maskell draws from his extensive industrial experience to show manufacturing managers how the use of more relevant measures of performance can assist them in attaining world class status. The author first establishes the need for performance measures that meet international competitive pressures. He then identifies shortcomings in commonly used measures that are based on conventional management accounting practice. Maskell suggests specific techniques for measuring delivery performance, customer service, process time, production flexibility, quality, financial performance, and social issues. Many measures suggested are not really new; they are simply not widely adopted. Maskell performs a useful function in bringing them together and demonstrating their importance. A call for improved performance measures was made by the National Center for Manufacturing Science in their publication written by Craig Giffi, Adela V. Roth, and Gregory M. Seal, Competing in World-Class Manufacturing: America's 21st Century Challenge (CH, May'91). Maskell has answered the call. References; graphs and tables.
