Abstract:
This dissertation is focused on initiating crashworthiness studies on car's frontal structures on a comparison basis etween the Proton Wira and the Volvo 760. The frontal structure was chosen as the area of interest based on the data collectiion conducted in the state of Johore for the years 1992 and 1994. It was pimpointed by the statistics that for every 100 car accidents, 50 are of the frontal impact nature. With this, the need to develop safer design in terms of after crash safety was given priority and this study was an initiation. The crashworthinesss study was conducted through simulation in asoftware. COSMOSM was ther software used as it has a module capable of running a cash analysis. It is important to note that the plastic deformation of the structure is essential for the study. The energy absorption capabilities ofthe modelled beams after crash is studied on a comparison basis and with the results obtained, the better stucture can be identified. Furthermore, the diaplacement under gone by the modelled beams due to the crash represents the amount of deformation of structure that takes place during the simulated crash. Stress areas can also be defined with the use of the software and is a suitable mode of comparison between the two structures. Results produced through this study need to be enhanced through recommended future work to enable it to serve as a guuide for safety vehicle design, namely cars.
