ea. vol: unpaged. (Hello Reading Series). Viking. 1987. PSm $7.95. PreS-Gr 1 Both books have colorful watercolor illustrations which incorpo rate the visual clues necessary for be ginning readers and rely on simple sen tences filled with word repetition. In Nicky Upstairs and Down , a little kitten plays on the stairs in his house. Say Good Night! is a symmetrically written story in which a young red-headed girl who does not want to go to bed asks, ``What's good about the night?'' After her mother lists several nice things about the night, the little girl finally goes to bed. When she does not want to get up in the morning, she asks her fa ther ``What's good about the morn ing?'' He points out several things which are good about mornings to con vince her to get up and start the day. Each of these easy readers is also a good concept book, and both should be popular. Booklist Review
Gr. 1. Nicky is a striped kitten who makes his way all over the house. When Mother Cat asks, ``Are you upstairs?'' he's usually down, and vice versa. One day Nicky's mom is looking for her kitten but he is nowhere to be found. Then finally he calls: ``Guess where I am? I'm not upstairs. I'm not downstairs.'' Instead, he is perched right in the middle of the staircase. Nicky is a cutie, delightfully represented in well-executed, full-color, cartoon-style illustrations. The pictures are bright and the short sentences, one or two per page, use the same words over and over just right for beginning readers. IC. Cats Fiction [OCLC] 86-40479
