Choice Review

Encyclop^Daedia Britannica and Getty Images, respected information brokers, have created an appealing reference book. Starting with 1850, this collection of facts and 2,000 photographs chronicles the 150 years since Dickens wrote and the Homestead Act drew hardy families to the western US. Organized by decade, the time line text frames pages with images in the middle. Chronological captions (6,000) mark milestones in science, technology, religion, education, politics, history, business, daily life, and the arts. Greater detail appears in spotlight articles. This resource is enhanced by a companion CD-ROM with another 20,000 images. Searchable by keyword and date range (e.g., dance between 1850 and 1930), the CD's explanatory text, date feature, and three size options make it a stellar addition. Another 2 million images and 10 million Britannica facts are accessible online. Although the core photographs are from the US and Europe, other locales are represented (e.g., Australian aborigines in 1850, China in 1860, and Sharpeville, South Africa, in 1960). Compelling photographs document a rich variety of subjects--from women volleyball players in long dresses in 1895, to Teddy Roosevelt fording a river on a moose, to Hurricane Katrina. Includes a 21-page index. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers; general readers. E. L. Bagley Agnes Scott College

Library Journal Review

This reasonably priced volume would entice just about anyone to learn about history owing primarly to the 2000 gorgeous photographs taking up the larger part of each page. The mostly black-and-white photos are arresting portraits and scenes in the categories of science (first in vitro baby), technology (Tommy gun), religion (Mormon family), daily life (early supermarket), politics (Kennedy, full page), the arts (Ulysses published), and sports (a team of the Negro League). Few of the photos are violent, and they are predominantly Anglo-American, but they also include India and South Africa. The 6000-entry chronology is in strips along the tops and bottoms of the pages and in 300 spotlight articles. The index makes it easy to find any particular image, while an accompanying DVD offers 20,000 additional pictures for added value and browsing pleasure. Famous stock-photo company Getty Images is teamed here with text from the equally famous Encyclopaedia Britannica. In a time of rapidly changing media, this work keeps both names in the public eye. Bottom Line Because a picture is always worth a 1000 words, this is a big improvement over Fact On File's "Day by Day" series and other day-by-day books-even popular web sites like AnyDay-in-History (www.scopesys.com/anyday). Public and university libraries will buy it for the sheer enjoyment of looking at the photographs and learning a bit of history along the way.-Janice Dunham, John Jay Coll.
