Choice Review

There is a pressing need for a book such as this for students of psychology, anthropology, linguistics, and education. The volume is a collection of papers by prominent American scientists who are applying Vygotsky's concepts to their own research areas. As more of Vygotsky's writings are translated from Russian, his impact on psychology and education in the US has the potential of becoming as important as Piaget's. Today many introductory psychology and education texts make references to Vygotsky's theory of language acquisition and the zone of proximal development, but few library books are available for students who wish to pursue these topics. Thus, Wertsch's collection is a necessary addition to academic libraries. Highly recommended for community college through graduate collections.-F. Smolucha, Moraine Valley Community College
