Summary
Summary
Scores of books and articles have been written in the popular press and mainstream marketplace about leadership: who leaders are, what they do, and why they matter. Yet in academia, there is a dearth of rigorous research, journal articles, or doctoral programs focused on leadership as a discipline. Why do top business schools espouse mission statements that promise to "educate the leaders of the future"- yet fail to give leadership its intellectual due?
The Handbook of Leadership Theory and Practice seeks to bridge this disconnect. Based on the Harvard Business School Centennial Colloquium "Leadership: Advancing an Intellectual Discipline" and edited by HBS professors Nitin Nohria and Rakesh Khurana, this volume brings together the most important scholars from fields as diverse as psychology, sociology, economics, and history to take stock of what we know about leadership and to set an agenda for future research.
More than a means of getting ahead and gaining power, leadership must be understood as a serious professional and personal responsibility. Featuring the thinking of today's most renowned scholars, the Handbook of Leadership Theory and Practice will be a catalyst for elevating leadership to a higher intellectual plane - and help shape the research agenda for the next generation of leadership scholars.
Author Notes
Nitin Nohria is Richard P. Chapman Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School and the coauthor of more than ten books and numerous articles on leadership. Rakesh Khurana is the Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development at Harvard Business School and writes about the institutional and cultural constructs that shape business leadership.

Choice Review
The premise of this book, based on the HBS Centennial Colloquium, "Leadership: Advancing an Intellectual Discipline," is that while there is an abundance of written works on the subject of leadership, there is very little systematic empirical research on leadership as an intellectual discipline. Each of the volume's five sections thoroughly examines a salient element of the topic: the impact of leadership, the theory of leadership, the variability of leadership, the practice of leadership, and the development of leaders. Additionally, 44 experts contribute to the 26 chapters, each of which is conceptually sound and intellectually rigorous while drawing practical implications for researchers. Just as Ralph M. Stodgill's 1974 Handbook of Leadership (which is now the Bass Handbook of Leadership, 4th ed., 2008) served as the inaugural standard reference work in the field, Nohria and Khurana's handbook will provide leadership researchers with a resource that will enhance their academic contributions. This is a must-have volume for serious undergraduate students interested in attaining a research-based perspective on leadership and a valuable resource for business and psychology faculty. Summing Up: Essential. Upper-division undergraduate through faculty and research collections. M. J. Safferstone University of Mary Washington
