Summary

Summary

Jens Jensen was one of America's greatest landscape designers and conservationists. Using native plants and "fitting" designs, he advocated that our gardens, parks, roads, playgrounds, and cities should be harmonious with nature and its ecological processes--a belief that was to become a major theme of modern American landscape design. In Jens Jensen: Maker of Natural Parks and Gardens, Robert E. Grese draws on Jensen's writings and plans, interviews with people who knew him, and analyses of his projects to present a clear picture of Jensen's efforts to enhance and preserve "native" landscapes.

Choice Review

Grese details the life and work of landscape designer and pioneer environmentmentalist Jensen, a Dane who settled in Chicago in the 1880s, who became influential in the development of an American style of landscaping. The book is biographical but also sets the context in which Jensen worked and traces the origins and inspirations of many of his ideas. Though perhaps not as well known as some of his contemporaries, Jensen was a primary proponent of using native plants to create natural settings on both private and public lands. Toward this goal, he worked with many architects, particularly those of the prairie school, for whom he helped to create a prairie style of landscape. He was a conservationist, a steward of nature, who was responsible for the preservation of several natural areas in Illinois through groups he helped to create. In this book there is much to be found: lists of projects (mostly in the Chicago area); plans for parks and gardens; biographical sketches of architects, teachers, artists, and designers; and a wealth of history about parks, gardens, and the conservation movement. A thorough treatment augmented with well-chosen photographs and drawings. General; faculty; professional. D. H. Pfister; Harvard University
