Choice Review

This volume goes beyond other recent books on the topic by not only describing the future work force, but also offering ideas on how to make this work force more productive. The authors' managerial insights and anecdotes could be used as a how-to guide for human resource departments. The research is excellent. This book contains authentic documentation of how some companies are managing diversity and describes a new approach called flex-management. Flex-management is believed to rekindle work spirit, satisfaction, and commitment by sharing power, information, and accountability, and by aligning rewards with individual preferences. Many people believe that human resource departments will play a much more important role in the strategic planning of corporations in the future. Jamieson and O'Mara provide what could be used as a handbook for human resource managers who want to have a greater strategic impact on their organizations. The book lists organizations and individuals noted for expertise in various aspects of managing more diverse work groups. Most appropriate for graduate and professional collections.-K. T. Miller, Quinnipiac College
