Choice Review
Psychologists Halpern (Claremont McKenna College; past president, American Psychological Association) and Cheung (Gender Research Centre, Chinese Univ. of Hong Kong) present findings from their study funded by the New Century Scholars Program. They interviewed 62 Chinese and US women executives about balancing family or caregiving responsibilities with work responsibilities and present their responses in this work. These women provide role models and guidance to women on successfully interweaving work and family domains. The first chapter discusses the research problem, the situation of women in executive-level positions, and the authors' research methodology. Chapters 2-8 examine various themes (e.g., mentoring for women, time management, balancing work responsibilities with marriage and child rearing, and women's leadership styles), providing illustrative interview quotes and connecting analysis with relevant scholarship. The final chapter, "How to Lead a Dually Successful Life," pulls together the book's themes and presents a model of interviewees' progression into leadership positions. It concludes with a "References" section and an appendix containing brief sketches of the women interviewed. This work is written in a readable narrative style and will interest those concerned with women's career and leadership development, work-family interrelationships, and political advocacy. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers; students, upper-division undergraduate and up; researchers; professionals. D. Truty Northeastern Illinois University
