Author Notes

Dale H. Besterfield, Ph.D., P.E. performs training for SPC, DOE, and TQM. He operates his own consulting firm, Besterfield & Assoc., and works with public and private organizations. Fortune 500 compies, universities, and small companies have used his services. He has conducted public seminars on SPC/SQC, TQM and DOE in cooperation with the American Management Assoc. and a number of universities. In addition, he was an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

He is an emeritus professor in the College of Engineering at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he developed and directed the graduate program in manufacturing systems, which has a strong quality focus. A recognized authority on quality control, he has authored over 22 publications, including a best-selling textbook, Quality Control , 7th edition, 2004, which has been translated into a number of languages. The third edition of Total Quality Management was released in 2002.

Prior to joining the University, he was an industrial engineer, quality engineer, and a first-line supervisor at the National Chengchi University, Taipei, Taiwan. He organized and participated in a six-day seminar on quality assurance at Damascus, Syria for the Arab world in 1994.

Dr. Besterfield is a registered professional engineer in Missouri and California, a certified manufacturing engineer, and a mamaber of ASQ, NAIT, and SME. He is a fellow of ASQ and receive their E. L. Grant Award for outstanding achievement.
