Choice Review

The sixth edition of Oxford's Dictionary of Science has more than 9,200 entries--760 more than the fifth edition. General science receives much of the coverage, and the book is a good resource for multidisciplinary inquiries. This new edition has increased coverage in the areas of astronomy, forensic chemistry, and computing. In addition, it includes 160 short biographical entries and eight appendixes featuring, e.g., the periodic table, plant and animal classifications, and tables of SI units and conversions. Incorporated throughout are ten illustrated features with titles such as "El Nino," "Crystal Defects," and "Solar System" along with ten chronologies (e.g., "Cell Biology," "Electronics," and "Vitamins"). Entries are cross-referenced. The Web link feature appears for selected entries and directs readers to a freely available companion Web site . The URL is rather long, so users will want to bookmark it for future reference. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and general readers. D. M.
