Choice Review

The decade of the '90s is witnessing a phenomenal explosion of the communication industry in every aspect. The widespread use of both wire-based communication such as the Internet and networking, and also wireless communication such as cellular phones, has posed a tremendous challenge to the signal processing community for better and cheaper technology. This book documents the invited and contributed talks of a 1996 international workshop that addressed this specific area. The 14 papers provide a state-of-the-art review of recent efforts by noted researchers around the world and thus can be considered as an up-to-date position statement of intelligent signal processing tools, applications, and implementation to the communication industry. The papers provide a general overview of the signal processing research in communication, the theoretical foundation, and the implementation aspects of coding and very large scale integrated circuit (VLSI) design methodology. For researchers and engineers who are pioneers in this fast growing area and for practitioners who are keeping up with the latest developments, this book is a must. J. Y.
