Booklist Review

The third edition of this book, first published in 1983, has been completely revised and updated. More than 1,000 alphabetical entries provide a concise but comprehensive overview of the major health issues affecting women. Contraception, childbirth, infertility, cancer, sexuality, and routine health care are among the subjects covered. New to this edition are entries on alternative therapies (Ayurveda, chiropractic, herbal medicines, homeopathy), bone-marrow transplants, cosmetic surgery, and Alzheimer's disease. Information on AIDS/HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases is up-to-date. Rape is covered, but there is nothing about domestic violence. The book is written in lay language and is easy to use. Ample cross-references appear in small capitals. Charts and line drawings augment the text. A subject index and a classified index that lists all the entries under general headings facilitate access. There is a small list of agencies for referral. Unfortunately, there is no bibliography. Although this book lacks the depth of The Women's Complete Healthbook (Delacorte, 1995), it is a useful ready-reference source for consumer-health collections. (Reviewed January 1 & 15, 1996)

Choice Review

This third edition (rev. ed., 1991; lst ed., CH, Oct'83) of a very useful ready reference book for general readers has clear black-and-white drawings (e.g., breast self-examination) scattered throughout, many careful see also and see under cross references, charts (e.g., basal body temperature), boxed lists (daily calcium needs, principal vitamins, ovarian cancer stages, etc.), principal entries subject index (Appendix A), addresses (Appendix B), and even an extensive detailed index. The entries tend to be quite lengthy, considering the book's dictionary format, and certainly not exclusively on female issues; see, for example, patients' rights, impotence, chemotherapy, infertility, AIDS, male contraceptives, anabolic steroids, and varicose veins. There are new entries on alternative medicine, HIV, gene therapy, bone marrow transplants, cosmetic surgery, prenatal tests, Alzheimer's disease, uterine monitoring, Raynaud's syndrome, scleroderma, and more. Very highly recommended for all academic libraries. All levels. E. R. Paterson; SUNY College at Cortland

Library Journal Review

This is the second editon of Ammer's The A to Z of Women's Health ( LJ 12/15/82), which our reviewer called ``a useful ready reference for the general reader.'' One hundred alphabetized entries on women's health topics have been added to this edition, bringing the total to 1000. According to new publisher Facts on File (the previous publisher was Everest House: Dodd), all material has been updated, and new entries include material on AIDS, cholesterol, infertility, and sexually transmitted diseases. The book was previously available as a paperback; it is now being released as a hardcover.-- Judy Quinn, ``Library Journal'' (c) Copyright 2010.
