Summary

This stimulating and thought-provoking collection of papers was organized during a time of great change, both in the world perception of the usefulness of Artificial Intelligence and in the world perception of science in the USSR. The introduction of Glaznost has opened a window to the USSR, and this conference has made use of that window, providing not only a welcomed meeting point for scientists from throughout the world, but also a look at topics currently interesting and active in science in the Soviet Union.
