Choice Review
In just over 400 pages, Ko (Univ. of Maryland) and Rossen (Univ. of California at Los Angeles) address the essentials for teaching online. They discuss course management systems, Web-published materials, and fully online and blended courses. While a necessity for online teaching novices, the book will also be useful to experienced instructors. The book is divided into three sections; the reader can easily return to individual chapters dealing with specific needs. Part 1 is aimed at the novice and provides an overview of online environments, including questions to ask about available resources. Part 2 may be the most valuable section as it addresses course creation from start to finish. It covers pedagogical concepts such as class organization, syllabus creation, and tips for collaborative activities. Chapter 8 provides a reasonable overview of the complex copyright and intellectual property issues for online teaching. Part 3 looks at classroom management issues, student concerns, and effective use of Web-enhanced and blended classes. The book includes a wealth of examples showing the varied possibilities for online instruction, along with a basic glossary and an extensive guide to Web resources.
