Summary

Summary

Cooling buildings is a major global energy consumer and the energy requirement is growing year by year. This guide to solar cooling technology explains all you need to know about how solar energy can be converted into cooling energy. It outlines the difference between heat-driven and photovoltaic-driven systems and gives examples of both, making clear in what situations solar cooling technology makes sense. It includes chapters on:

* solar thermal collectors

* solar cooling technologies

* cold distribution

* storage components

* designing and sizing

* installation, operation and maintenance

* economic feasibility

* potential markets

* case studies.

Solar Cooling is for engineers, architects, consultancies, solar thermal technology companies, students and anyone who is interested in getting involved with this technology.

Author Notes

Prof. Dr-Ing. Paul Kohlenbach is a professor at the Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin, Germany. His area of expertise is renewable energies, including but not limited to solar thermal process heat, solar cooling, concentrating solar power (CSP), trigeneration, façade integrated solar systems, solar hot water systems, hydrogen technology and fuel cells. He is also the founder and owner of Solem Consulting, an international consortium of leading experts in solar technologies which was founded in 2008. Over thirteen years of professional experience with solar thermal systems, especially in engineering design, planning and control of such make him an internationally renowned solar expert.

Dr. Uli Jakob is the General Manager of Solem Consulting in Europe and an internationally renowned solar cooling expert. His areas of expertise are building physics, renewable energies and climate engineering, with a special focus on innovative energy concepts and energy-efficient buildings. He is also founder and owner of dr. jakob energy research, a consultancy for research, product development and marketing with a focus on renewables, energy-efficient buildings and industry. Dr. Jakob has over thirteen years of professional experience, especially with the product development and commercialisation of solar/thermal cooling kits. He is also a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Stuttgart, Germany and Hamburger Fern-Hochschule, Germany.
