Summary
Summary
Population size, population density, and living standards are controlled by availability of natural resources: minerals, energy, water and land. Use of these resources is independent. Much attention has been directed to long-term societal limits to consumption patterns imposed by exponential growth, but little attention has been directed to the way the world must proceed in the nearer future for the next 50 years.

Choice Review
These reports from two 1986 Dahlem Workshops on Resources and World Development are written by experts from academic, governmental, and research institutions primarily in North America, Europe, and Australia. Multidisciplinary perspectives are given on a broad range of issues in the area of natural resources--mineral, land, and water. Looking at the next 50 years, the authors have attempted to assess trends in resource use and availability. Their observations and conclusions are fascinating reading, understandable to even the nonexpert. Each paper has an extensive bibliography and there are many excellent diagrams, tables, and charts. An appendix lists the participants, their addresses, and fields of research. The subject and author indexes are detailed and very useful; the binding and printing are of high quality. Recommended for all levels in academic settings. -J. L. Pfander, University of Arizona
