Abstract:
In the past, the use of a museum is one privilege seldom found. It is only used or owned by just a minority of learnered people interesting in cultural exhibits. With the rapid growth of social development, more museums are built today and has now become part of every individual. One important characteristic in the building of a museum is the lighting system of the exhibition spaces the problems arising from illumination is one aspect often difficult to predict in any museum building. This aspect should be considered before any museum is built. The lighting engineer can only help an architect or lighting designer in getting the desired effect, but the definite style dependss on the architect of lighting designer himself. In this dissertation, the study is to give a moderate understanding towards architectural lighting of exhibitionh spaces as a guide to design the type of lightimng system for museums to be built in the future. This study wishes to show:- a) An awareness to words the values and criteria which will influence the architectural lighting design of the exibition spaces of a museum particularly the values towards the functional and psychological needs. The knowledge on the psychophysical effects (ie the effectual relationship between the human perceptual aspect based on biological characteristics and the illumination aspects which is based on Physics) is useful in this field as it can help the lighting designer to design system which satisfies the demands of functional and psychological requirements. The efficiency of a particular lighting system depends greatly on the visual requirements ie the extent of which the details of exibit to be seen. It should allow accurate vision of the collection displayed. This also means that the lighting systems should help to bring out a peaceful environment and at times should be stressed to attract the eye of those involved in creating an interesting atmosphere. In a museuum, the form of exhibition involve the scope of vision at the time it is seen, what has been seen and what is a dynamic one. under these circumstances the visitor will always be in the lighting zone and is part of the total environment to give and to feel the effect of illumination in exhibition spaces. This impose problems of shadows cast by visitors and the dynamic effect of glare caused by lighting fixtures. The lighting design of a museum is unique because it is not only designed for visual comfort of visitors but also a comfort for objects sensitive to light. A compromise of these two factors should be made before the mode of lighting to be used is decided. To introduce the technique and method of lighting system and its effects in an exibition space. The requirements of the lighting system in a museum is entirely different from the system used in other buildings due to its needs of an entirely flexible system covering a large field of needs and situation in one common space. For example a jewel in a showcase needs a different character of illumination from a painting hanging on a wall. Based on the study of (a) and (b) the writer had chosen a sample to discuss the pros and conms of the study model, ie the National Museum Malaysia. The choice of this building as a case study does not mean that the lighting system used is a perfect one. It is just as an examples to show the effects of system used practically. It is hoped that with this knowledge it will help to give line in designing a lighting system in museum in the near future.
