Summary

Winner of Choice Magazine - Outstanding Academic Titles for 2007Sustainability promises both reduced environmental impacts and real cash savings for any organization - be it a business, non-profit/NGO or government department. This easy-to-use manual has been written by top business consultants specifically to help managers, business owners, organizational leaders and aspiring environmental managers/sustainability coordinators to improve their organization's environmental, social and economic performance. The authors demystify 'sustainability', untangle the plethora of sustainability frameworks, tools and practices, and make it easy for the average person in any organization to move towards sustainability. Organized by sector (manufacturing, services and office operations, and government) and common organizational functions (senior management, facilities, human resources, purchasing, environmental affairs and compliance, marketing and public relations, and finance and accounting), the authors show how organizations can incorporate sustainability into their everyday work through the application of useful tools and self-assessments.

Choice Review

Hitchcock and Willard (consultants and teachers of sustainable business practices) provide an excellent introduction and reference resource for the design, implementation, and evaluation of a business's sustainability plan to promote environmental conservation and reduce waste throughout the organization. The book's 12 well-written, readable chapters are divided into three parts: the first defines sustainability and its key components; the second reviews sustainability strategies by industry sector, e.g., manufacturing, service, government; and the last describes sustainability practices by departmental function, e.g., management, human resources, purchasing. Interesting real-life examples from business, education, not-for-profits, and local and national governments enhance the chapters. Topics include evaluating strategic threats; exploring emerging opportunities; assessing life cycles and life-cycle costs; environmental design and the conversion of products to services; using wasted resources to advantage; developing social capital; sustainability reporting; aligning human resource systems and attracting committed employees; and community-based stakeholder involvement in sustainability. Resource lists and self-assessment checklists enhance chapters. There are notes and a list of abbreviations and acronyms. Two appendixes, "Sustainability Framework and Tools" and "Certification Schemes," complete the book. Though oriented toward management professionals, this work will be of value to business students. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduate and technical program students as well as practitioners. S. R. Kahn University of Cincinnati
