Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a powerful engineering tool, capable of providing effective assistance in many engineering applications. This book discusses some of the important issues dealing with the introduction and successful use of AI in engineering. The first part of the book introduces the important concepts of representation, reasoning, implementation strategies, and knowledge engineering, followed by practical applications. The chapter on computer vision in industry is particularly enlightening; it is well illustrated and describes applications such as visual inspection and robot guidance. Finally, advanced concepts in logic, discrete mathematics, and hardware are discussed. The various authors draw on their expertise in AI and various engineering disciplines. This book will be useful to those studying artificial intelligence, expert systems, and electrical engineering. Advanced undergraduates and up. -C. C. Tappert, IBM Watson Research Center
