Choice Review

Presenting a broad collection of diverse materials that conduce to the assembly and operation of optical systems, this book is intended for readers with scientific and engineering background who wish to gain exposure to this rapidly expanding field. Principles are emphasized and lengthy derivations are excluded. The book can be divided into two general parts. The first concentrates on basic functional components that govern an optical system, and it provides a basis for understanding the second part, where applications are discussed. The various chapters are written by individuals with established expertise in their subject areas. The topics are carefully selected and clearly described to provide a continuity of theme. Optical communication, sensing, and signal processing systems are addressed. The book is well illustrated and extensive lists of references are provided at the end of each chapter. No examples or problems are given. Graduate level. -O. Eknoyan, Texas A & M University
