Summary

Summary

This collection brings together studies and essays which represent the best work being done in the area of qualitative research in early childhood settings. The research spans the full range of early childhood settings from infant-toddler and home day care programs to primary classrooms.

The volume is designed to appeal to scholars doing early childhood research and to graduate students and their instructors in general early childhood research courses, specialized early childhood qualitative research courses, and general qualitative research courses. Experienced scholars doing qualitative work related to early childhood will see the book as essential because, for the first time, a comprehensive treatment of this emerging area of inquiry is provided. Less-seasoned researchers will find the collection useful in providing fundamental knowledge and concrete examples to guide their scholarly development.

Reviews 1

Choice Review

This informative and thoughtful examination of qualitative research should be widely read. Unfortunately, its cost will probably limit its purchase to libraries. The articles are organized in two sections: "Studies"; and "Methods, Ethics, and Theory." Although the two essays by the editor are particularly fine, each author provides valuable insight into the application of this methodology. Leavitt's observations of some infant/toddler care is a painful and honest report, well balanced by Nelson's interviews of family day care providers. The value of this methodology for use in classrooms is underscored by two articles focused on teachers. McGee and Brown give an example of how qualitative and quantitative methods can be used together, but Tobin's argument for applying poststructuralist theory to research in early childhood education is not convincing. Well written, with excellent reference lists, this is an outstanding contribution to the field. Highly recommended for upper-division undergraduates through faculty. S. Sugarman; Bennington College
