Abstract:
Introduction : Visual art is an important aspect of cultural expression. It reflects the cultural norms and religious pactices of various ethnic. In a multi-racial society, cultural education plays a vital role toward achieving a harmonous community. While performing arts have been widely publicise as part of cultural education, visual art education has, so ar been limited to mere academic exercise. The unprecendented growth in the country demands a greater sensitivity towards the aesthetic of built environment. A few disciplines of visual art, interior design, fine art and graphic art for instant, have since become important professions. These professionals must be trained symtematically so as to be able to contribute positively to the development of the country. The competition in obtaining a place for studying art in public institutions is always extremely stiff due to the large numbers of applicants. This situation has left many artistically talented school leavers frustrated in their attempt to achieve their goals. Recognising these facts, many private institutions have been sest up to give these students alternative educational opportunity. Malaysian Institute of Art (M.I.A) is one of the earliest established institutions. This institution has gradually been given serious attention by the public, not as a profit-oriented business corporation, but as a source of man power with important contribution towards the development and the building of a nation. Scope and methodology : (i) Analysis of brief; (ii) Overall site planning; (iii) Design for the academic buildings; (iv) Technical studies. The design methodology is explained by the flow chart below. The Client : The proposed project is going to be part of the expansion program by Malaysia Institute of Art (M.I.A). This private institution offers various disciplines in art education. It was founded in 1968 by artist Mr. Chung Chen Sun with the belief that education is the common responsibility of the society. This institution is supported by groups of individuals and organizations which have responded positively to the call by Mr. Chung. in recognising its role as a non-profit making art institution, the government has granted tax-examption status to the institution. The Site : The site has been selected based on the criterias as follows : (i) Kuala Lumpur as the base for M.I.A.; (ii) The condusive environment needed for an art institution; (iii) Transportation linkage with the centre of cultural activities (Kuala Lumpur); (iv) Back-up facilities such as student accomodation, shops etc; (v) The implementation of the project shall compliment the surrounding activities and eivnronment. The selected site is located in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. It covers 5.4 acres of land. Important characteristic are: (i) Slopy, with one-fifth of the area at 30% to 50% slope (difficult grade). Flat land in the valley formed only about half of the area of the site; (ii) Stream with permanent water source; (iii) Monotonous view of the rubber plantation with old and dying rubber trees; (iv) Major developments in the region are housing estates; (v) Significance institutions are FINAS Filem Studio and National Zoo. The Proposal : The proposed campus is projected to house 1500 fulltime students and 50 permanent staff. The main objective is to provide a place for acquiring a commanding knowledge and skills in fine art, graphic art, art education, interior design, ceramic art etc.. The products shall be of high degree of professionalism.
