The language of mathematics has become a concern of mathematics educators in recent years. It has become ever more apparent that students have much difficulty understanding mathematics in part because of misinterpretations of common vocabulary when used in a mathematical context. Pimm examines all of the major aspects of communication in language-speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Through actual transcripts of classroom interactions, the reader is able to examine and analyze how mathematics is learned through language. In particular, the major theme emphasizes how the teacher helps the student to learn mathematics by acting as interpreter of the language into its mathematical concepts. This book is an important one for preservice and in-service teachers of mathematics at all grade levels. Its value would be greatly enhanced if a set of video tapes were to be available as a companion reference. This work should be included in libraries serving a population of teachers-both prospective and practicing.-E. Krinsky, California State University, Dominguez Hills
