Summary

Summary

Smith introduces fracture and fatigue and provides a series of simple, useful programs which implement those methods. The topic is well suited to a computer based approach since repetitive calculations can be done simply and quickly with just a few lines of BASIC. Choice Review

Smith is concerned with elementary fracture mechanics and its implementation for numerical solution on a microcomputer using the BASIC language. Over the span of six chapters the author has done a creditable job of discussing the essentials of elastic and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics in a simple manner, and that of computer implementation of the relevant formulas to find stresses and displacements near the crack tip, stress intensity factor by different methods, plastic zone size, fracture toughness, and fatigue crack growth, strain energy density, etc. In the process the ground work is laid for implementation of fracture mechanics capabilities by advanced modeling techniques like finite element and boundary element methods. The book is well organized; the index is complete; the illustrations are well done; and the inclusion of example and exercise problems are useful features. However, the number of references at the end of each chapter is not adequate. The BASIC program listings are complete and are integrated into the main text; the programs are well documented and include sample runs. Suitable for community colleges and above.-P. K.
